A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
