Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
