Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another creative title missed out that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
